Connecting MOOCs (cck11/mobiMOOC) & MALAT

Connectivism and Connective Knowledge (cck11) is wrapping up 😦 For me, the past 12 weeks of engaging with the facilitators, learners, and guests on myriad topics related to connections, knowledge, and technology has been more valuable that I could have imagined.  While I am sad to see this iteration ending, I find comfort in hope that CCK12 or 13 is coming and am looking forward to future participation in open online courses.

I have been remiss in not being more reflective throughout CCK11 but am proud that I was able to attend all by one of the synchronous Elluminate sessions where I was a quiet participant more than a  lurker ;), I engaged with 50% or more of the recommended resources for each topic; I also joined the CCK11 FaceBook group and posted occasionally.   My first experiences in a MOOC were brilliant and I am determined to jump into mobiMOOC with both feet, which means setting some goals 😉

mobiMOOC started with a short survey forcing students to identify their motives!! Okay, untrue, but I was faced with pondering and identifying the level at which I planned to participate (lurker,  moderate, active) during the course of the next 6 weeks.  My hope is to gain more from being more actively involved in this course than I was in the last.  A big part of this comes in planning for the development of an mLearning project; however, I feel that there are a number of clear connections to support project development between CCK11, mobiMOOC, and my  RRU grad studies and I think have an idea for a project 🙂

My final assignment in LRNT505 will focus on my philosophy of education with an emphasis on online facilitation.  My plan is to structure this final assignment around an project example: illustrating my philosophy in practice.  The especially cool thing: I can review my professional philosophy as I research a project that I hope to develop with facilitator support throughout the six weeks of mobiMOOC.

If anyone happens to read this, you will find below, my preliminary project proposal for mobiMOOC based on the project template the course organizers provided; the title for my project provides a link to a publicly editable version on GoogleDocs if you would like to comment on specific areas.

My mLearning project

1. Working title: A mOOC  How to Develop & Host  m&MOOCs
*I took the liberty of ‘re’defining mooc, and will conduct research to determine if I had any right to do so.
MOOC- Massive Open Online Course (6+ weeks, prepared to accommodate vast numbers of learners)
mOOC- mini Open Online Course (1-5 weeks, prepared to accommodate any number of learners)

2. Type of mLearning: education

3. Project goal:
To create a mini open online course (mOOC) focused on developing skills required to successfully develop and facilitate an open online course using mobile devices (smart-phone, iPad, &/or laptop/netbook)

4. Target audience:
Which type of mobile device will be offered or do the target audience have at their disposal?

  • course materials will be accessible using smart-phones, iPads &/or laptops/netbooks

What type of connectivity is to be expected on the target audience level?

  • High-speed internet/4g preferred; however, media should be accessible and not hindered by lower speed accessibility

5. Who are ALL the stakeholders that might influence the project?

  • project developer (myself as a learner)
  • mobiMOOC facilitators supporting development
  • my fellow learners who will (hopefully) share their thoughts & suggestions
  • technical consulting & support (hosting? accessibility? platform usability?)

6. Deadline or timeline for developing the project (if any):

7. Description of the project:

  • In conjunction with CCK11, LRNT505 (Royal Roads University grad program in learning and technology), and mobiMOOC I will develop a mini open online course (mOOC) designed to provide learners with a concise and usable skill set for developing and facilitating a successful m/MOOC based on a topic that they are passionate about teaching/sharing.
  • This idea is inspired by a desire to learn more about the process of ID, specifically in developing and open online course.  By focusing my mOOC on how to develop/host a m/MOOC, I hope to empower and inspire learners to create and facilitate their own courses, thus contributing to the development of a rich repository of open online learning opportunities & resources.
  • Preliminary research for this project will focus on key elements of effective online facilitation &  will provide the context for my LRNT505 final project (see LRNT505 Assignment3_(A3) criteria). Topics will include: learning theory, best practices in online facilitation, community building, humour & culture, as well as more personal elements that will later be evidenced in my sample project (How to Develop & Host  m&MOOCs) such as my personal philosophy of education (particularly, in online facilitation) as well as setting & reflecting on personal learning goals.
    AND specific steps outlining the process and requirements for developing and facilitating a m/MOOC (much research needs to be done in this area to ensure a high level of understanding on my part to ensure comfort in presenting the course to others and effectiveness in my role as facilitator of their learning).
  • *Preliminary pondering* Final presentation of How to Develop & Host m&MOOCs
    • will be contained on a wiki site (eg. mobiMOOC)
    • will include training modules (recommended resources & activities) on the following:
      –  The value in identifying one’s professional philosophy of online facilitation*
      –  Applying one’s philosophy to instructional design for online learning environments*
      –  Applying one’s philosophy to facilitating in online learning environments*
      –  Organizing and developing a m/MOOC
      –  Strategies for collaboration and utilizing resources in one’s PLN
      –  …. key skills related to MOOC development
      *I am uncertain about the relevance of presenting the first 3 topics in a course intended to be a basic introduction to developing & hosting m&MOOCs; however, these topics are key to reinforcing my knowledge & understanding from LRNT505; the planning and research steps will be completed and presented as part of A3, regardless of inclusion in the final mOOC

8. Which steps will you take to ensure you will reach your mLearning goal?

  • start building a project plan
  • begin process of gathering resources (MALAT moodle site/course materials, mobiMOOC facilitators
  • revisit my philosophy; apply to key elements of facilitation in online environment
  • Daydream about future possibilities and pull out the best ideas for this project 🙂

9. Problems you are not sure about? (so we can have a look and suggest possible solutions)

  • This is my first attempt at creating a course for adults, let alone one intended to be presented online; at this stage, I am eager for feedback.  Are my ideas ridiculous? lofty? uninteresting?
  • How will others react?
  • Stephen & George don’t seem like proprietary creatures, but they did develop the concept…but they have been encouraging us to re-purpose content…
    A goal?  Design How to Develop & Host m&MOOCs: a mOOC, as an exceptionally high quality eLearning/mLearning opportunity, that MOOC pioneers are proud to endorse.

The student in me is very curious to receive feedback; the human in me is terrified that folks might actually read my proposal, ponder and perhaps even comment :0

    Admiring your project, daring and clear concept.
    Facilitating in a M/mOOC has to be very connectivist. In my opinion facilitating must be done by participants. A bit like shared leadership, every participant is fulfilling a facilitation role or function. These functions could be encouragement, commenting, organizing, socializing, questioning, etc. Do you agree?

      Thank you for being the first to respond to my project concept Jaap. I wholeheartedly agree with the points you made above; absolutely, the course itself must be Connectivist in nature, as will the initial course development 😉 I would not be brave enough to consider such a project without the support I know is accessible through various connections in my existing personal learning network (PLN) and I look forward to exploring new connections throughout this journey.
      In my graduate program, I am developing requisite skills to be an effective online facilitator; what I’ve learned is enhanced by participating in MOOCs, such as cck11 and mobiMOOC, which allows me to extend my understanding through observation, reflection and learning with online facilitators in action. My intention is to develop a learner centred course which fosters a safe sense of community, where participants feel valued and are comfortable sharing ideas by engaging in discourse with one another. I look forward to facilitating a mOOC that nurtures learner self-awareness, develops self-confidence, empowers participants to become personally responsible for their learning and inspires them to seek new connections while pursuing their passions.
      I noticed that you raised this topic in a past blog entry and wonder if you feel there is a shift in facilitator roles & responsibilities between the type of facilitation we experienced in cck11 as compared to that of mobiMOOC after the first week? How do you think learner experience might be different as a result of transitioning to new facilitators each week? Do learners play a stronger role as facilitator in one course over the other?
